Archery

1st Nailsea has a few people with the GNAS Archery Leaders Award. This is a sport that goes back long before Robin Hood and still has the potential to thrill participants. Archery can be done indoors or outside provided that a safe environment is achievable. Safety is always our first concern. There are many forms of archery but within the group we tend to stick to target archery using recurve bows. We shoot over many different distances but generally start at 10 yards (it is an ancient sport) and work up. Most Scouts will get as far as shooting 40 yards but in some cases if enough practice is gained they can shoot 50 or 60 yards. In national competition it is quite normal to shoot up to 100 yards but you need the right equipment and skill for this.

 

The idea is to hit the target with each circle scoring more points as you get closer to the centre. Normally a person will shoot 6 arrows as an end and then score. Targets are coloured white, black, blue, red and gold from the outside inwards and each colour will score 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 although in some competitions each colour is split into two parts and each concentric ring is worth 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 with an x being scored for an inner gold. People shoot a number of ends and then total up the scores to see who has won.

 

We use recurve bows but there are a number of other types of bow available including compound, hunting, and longbow. We use certain bits of equipment when shooting either to protect ourselves from the string or to hold things. We have a bracer strapped to our arm, a tab on our hand to help when pulling the string, arrows and quivers to keep the arrows in. There is a lot of equipment all of which costs money and takes a lot of time to maintain.

 

We have entered teams in the Avon County Scout Archery Competition every year since 2009 and have alawys come home with places. We hope in the future to enter the National Scout Archery Competition.
